U.S. to partner with the nation to address drought and terrorism.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the Pentagon this week to discuss American aid in the East African country. The U.S. military has had a presence in Somalia for the last three decades to help combat al-Shabaab, a 10,000-strong jihadist military group based in the country linked to Al-Qaeda. There is also an ongoing drought that is affecting Somalia in the midst of the conflict.
“This period will be especially important given the ongoing hostilities — including instability in Sudan — and the persistent threat of al-Shabaab,” Secretary Austin said to President Mohamud. “Our cooperation on these operations is crucial, and we stand ready as your partner as you defend yourselves against these dangerous and violent forces.”
President Mohamud stated, “I would like to extend my gratitude to the United States government for the assistance to the Somali people in our fight against al-Shabaab.” The president added, “Many issues that I have raised with you last time when I visited here [are] still standing. But so far, we are so good, and we are very much satisfied for the level of support provided. I thank you.”
